Open Data

Licensed/ Proprietary Data

Open data is defined by the gvt of canada as structured data that is machine-readable, freely shared to be used and built on without restrictions.
Gold standard, what about best effort? The key things to remember about open data are:
Availability and access: the data must be available as a whole preferably by downloading over the internet. The data must also be available in a convenient and modifiable form.
Re-use and redistribution: the data must be provided under terms that permit re-use and redistribution including the intermixing with other datasets.
Universal participation: everyone must be able to use, re-use and redistribute. .
Not all data can be open data. Sometimes an organization is unable to release data as open data because of certain restrictions.

Limitations more specific for agri data:
Third party data - organization may not have the rights to openly distribute
Commercial license - data purchased from third parties, which may have limited rights for distribution
Vendor limitations – data that is delivered under a contract, which captures exclusions for extracting and manipulating data

Proprietary data refers to data that is controlled or owned by an organization. It's protected by copyright, trade secret laws, and even a patent agreement. Accessing this data usually means paying a sum of money and entering into an agreement with the license holder.

Exploring the ACI

Key points:

Access:
1. Nothing wrong with googling, but be aware of Google
2. Think authoritative sources (AAFC)
